Description
Saint Sulpice-it-s the second largest church in Paris (although one website claims it's the largest). However, anything other than Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, or Sainte Chapelle in Paris often gets bypassed. I probably would have bypassed it myself except that I had just re-read The Da Vinci Code and wanted to visualize the setting for myself. In the book, an albino monk-assassin named Silas pays a visit to Saint Sulpice, based on instructions Sauniere revealed to Silas at gunpoint in the Louvre. The monk searches for a keystone believed to unlock the secret of the Holy Grail. Despite this 'fame', the Archdiocese of Paris refused Ron Howard permission to film inside Saint Sulpice when he was making The Da Vinci Code movie. The current building is the second one on this site. Construction began in 1646, was expanded in 1670, stalled from 1678 to 1719, then resumed and was mostly complete by 1745. A wealthy and fashionable church on the Left Bank, Saint Sulpice went on to host the christenings of none-too-devout Marquis de Sade.
