Description
It was a cloudy and windy day for most of the time that I was at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe on the Bay of Biscay coast in Spain. Lucky for me, I had to walk 2.5 km back along the coast to catch the public bus from Bakio back to Bilbao. Why lucky? Along the way you get tantalizing peeks of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe through the trees at various viewpoints. And it was during my walk back that the clouds began to break and the sun cast everchanging and fast-moving shadows across the land and sea. So I waited and waited for just the perfect break in the clouds to light up the little hermitage. From afar you can appreciate what a lonely outpost San Juan de Gaztelugatxe would have been with the wild Bay of Biscay all around. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. The ascent to a hermitage at the top is said to be 241 steps, with the top being 80 m above sea level. The hermitage is named Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish, and is dedicated to John the Baptist. There are some indications that it might date from the 9th century, but firmer evidence indicates its existence back to the 10th century. For what looks like a small and insignificant islet today, it has been the scene of several historic events, including being sacked by Francis Drake, being attacked by the Huguenots, and being assaulted by English troops. On a more recent and peaceful note, it was used as a scene in season 7 of the Game of Thrones, standing in for Dragonstone.
