The first time I visited the Parish church of San Lorenzo (St Lawrence) in Manorola in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, there was no one in the church. But it was a sunny day. This rainy day when I visited, it seemed that everyone who walked by in the square came in to visit. Perhaps that is why so many candles were burning. There are many churches in Italy called San Lorenzo. Wikipedia states that St Lawrence is one of the most widely venerated saints of the Catholic Church. His martyrdom is legendary although disputed. Under Pope Sixtus II, Lorenzo held a position of great trust that included the care of the riches of the Church and the distribution of alms to the indigent. After the death of the pope, the secular administrator of Rome demanded that Lorenzo turn over the riches of the Church. Lorenzo asked for three days to gather the wealth and in the meanwhile worked swiftly to distribute as much Church property to the indigent as possible, so as to prevent its being seized by the government. After three days, when ordered to deliver the treasures of the Church, he presented the indigent, the crippled, the blind, and the suffering, and declared that these were the true treasures of the Church. One account records him declaring "The Church is truly rich, far richer than your emperor." This act of defiance led directly to his martyrdom. This story, true or not, should resonate with Christians today.
