Description
While waiting for sunset high above Florence Italy, we wandered into San Miniato al Monte basilica. It is at one of the highest points in Florence and has been described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most scenic churches in Italy. Legend has it that St Miniato was an Armenian prince serving in the Roman army who was denounced for being a Christian. The Roman Emperor ordered him to be thrown to the beasts in the Amphitheatre, but the beasts refused to eat him. He was then beheaded (CE 250), and in one of the ongoing themes of Christian mythology, he picked up his head and walked up the hill above Florence to his hermitage. A shrine was later erected at the spot. Nine centuries later in 1013, a church was dedicated to this martyr. The interior mosaic in this image is of “Christ Between the Virgin and St Minias” and was made in 1297. Minias is on the right holding a crown, symbolizing his giving his earthly crown to Christ. The inscription above him read S. Miniatus Rex Erminie (King of Armenia).
