Description
I was staying at a small bed and breakfast directly across from the piazza from the Catholic Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome Italy and when I came back to my lodgings the first evening, I was struck by the beautiful lighting but too tired to take advantage of it. I decided to trust the weather report that said clear skies for the next few days and put off my night photos until my last night in Rome. That way, I could just run out at dusk, take my photos, go back inside and pack for my flight! The weather pulled through for me and the lights went on as expected around sunset. In the lovely spring weather, a lot of people also seemed to be waiting in the piazza for the nighttime display! The Basilica is owned by the Vatican but lies within Italian territory. Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major) is one of only 4 papal/major basilicas in the world, which happed to be all in Rome: The other 3 are Saint Peter's (technically in Vatican City); Saint John in Lateran; Saint Paul Outside the Walls. The medieval bell tower of the basilica is the tallest in Rome, at 75 meters. A church at this site dates from the 4th century. According to legend, "During the pontificate of Liberius, the Roman patrician John and his wife, who were without heirs, made a vow to donate their possessions to the Virgin Mary. They prayed that she might make known to them how they were to dispose of their property in her honour. On 5 August, at the height of the Roman summer, snow fell during the night on the summit of the Esquiline Hill. In obedience to a vision of the Virgin Mary which they had the same night, the couple built a basilica in honour of Mary on the very spot which was covered with snow.” The façade and most of the interior date from renovations in the 18th century.
