Description
The 14th century campanile (bell tower) of Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica is the highest in Rome Italy, at 240 feet, (about 75 m). I happened to have this spectacular dawn view of the tower because I was staying at a convent that provided lodging on a nearby street, and which had a rooftop patio. I had read about this unique lodging experience and decided to give it a try. But that is another story! Pursuant to the Lateran Treaty of 1929 between the Holy See and Italy, the Vatican fully owns the Santa Maria Maggiore, and Italy is legally obligated to recognize its full ownership and to concede to it "the immunity granted by International Law to the headquarters of the diplomatic agents of foreign States". As a papal basilica, Santa Maria Maggiore is often used by the pope. Santa Maria Maggiore is one of only 4 papal/major basilicas in the world, which all happen to be in Rome: The other 3 are Saint Peter's (technically in Vatican City); Saint John in Lateran; Saint Paul Outside the Walls. A church at this site dates from the 4th century. According to legend, "During the pontificate of Liberius, the Roman patrician John and his wife, who were without heirs, made a vow to donate their possessions to the Virgin Mary. They prayed that she might make known to them how they were to dispose of their property in her honour. On 5 August, at the height of the Roman summer, snow fell during the night on the summit of the Esquiline Hill. In obedience to a vision of the Virgin Mary which they had the same night, the couple built a basilica in honour of Mary on the very spot which was covered with snow.” . Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome's sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
