Description
The black and white version of Saugerties Lighthouse matches the mood of the day when I visited there...overcast, and maybe just a bit spooky. But the minute I read that Saugerties Lighthouse operated as a bed and breakfast, I knew I had to try to stay there on my trip up the Hudson Valley. Unfortunately, I was more than a minute too late since this is a popular place to stay and is booked up about a year in advance. Luckily you can still walk out to the lighthouse if the tide is low and dream that you are staying here. There are year-round accommodations and it is restored to look as it did in 1900. So you have to be prepared for cast iron heaters in the cold weather, no TV, and the sound of rushing tides. When it was built in 1869, it replaced the earlier 1838 lighthouse. Its Coast Guard service was ended in 1954. It is currently managed by the non-profit Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy which purchased the lighthouse in 1986 and has restored it, including relighting the light in 1990. The conservancy manages the nature trail leading to the lighthouse, offers two bed and breakfast rooms and public tours. Saugerties Light is listed on the National Park Service's Maritime Heritage Program list of lighthouses to visit and as one of New York's Historic Light Stations.
