Description
Although only an ' an ordinary and plain two story wooden house' during its day as part of palace life at Deoksugung, I was enchanted by this view of Seogeodang Hall at night. I could imagine seeing the welcoming light if you were a traveler heading home. Seogeodang Hall is where King Seonjo lived and died. He was the 14th Joseon king and ruled from 1567 to 1608, and was the first Joseon king to reside here. Deoksugung became a royal 'palace' during the Japanese invasions of Korea after all of the other palaces were burned in 1592. The design is ordinary without decorations or paint, which is similar to houses at the time. The hall features a two tiered roof, the only one at the Deoksugung Palace. The building resembles a typical private residence during the Joseon Dynasty. After other of the palaces were rebuilt in 1618, Deoksugung was used as an auxiliary palace for 270 years. In 1904, this building, along with some others in the palace compound, were destroyed by a fire. They were all rebuilt later that same year.
