Description
Like any big city, Seoul is a city of contrasts. And the contrast between the traditional hanoks and the new city hall could not be greater! However, while the building appears ultra-modern, it still relates to Korean history and tradition. The architecture symbolizes both the capitals devotion to democracy in its transparent glass faade and to sustainable development with its lush, interior multi-story green wall. In reference to the undulating mountainous terrain surrounding Seoul, the architects created a dramatic curve into the new city hall, which gives it a likeness to a giant wave in motion. The buildings curvaceous silhouette, which is partly mirrored in the curved green walls, is both a nod to the eaves in traditional Korean architecture as well as an energy-efficient feature that helps mitigate solar heat gain.
