Description
This is one of the most tasteful 9/11 memorials I have ever seen. It is located in Pensacola FL, on the Palafox Street median just north of Garden Street and south of Martin Luther King Plaza. When you see it from afar, it's not immediately obvious what it is. It looks more like a native American design that you might see in the Pacific Northwest. But walk up close and around the edges of the stones in the archway you see the numbers 91101 repeated over and over and over in a continuous line all around the arch. Look more closely and you see the names of various continents, countries, and cities inscribed on the stones: France, India, Oceania, China, Miami, Los Angeles, and on and on, all the places that lost citizens on that day. The sculpture is called 9-11 Homage to America. The statue was donated to the City of Pensacola by artists Peter King and Xinia Marin. It is 12 feet high and weighs 10,000 pounds. The two artists own Stonehaus Pottery Gallery & Tile in Pensacola. The piece originated as part of an exhibition, entitled "Architectural Passages," that the couple completed--amazingly- on September 10, 2001. After the attacks, they revised the concept of the sculpture, depicting "the melding of global cultures [and] the creation of a tolerant and diverse society living peacefully together on one planet." As if to symbolize this melding, the statue is located at the center of the city, where the streets are named North, South, East, and West. A dedication ceremony was held on September 11, 2004, the third anniversary of the attacks.
