Description
The Belgrade Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Belgradi Szekesegyhaz) in Szentendre (about 20 km from Budapest) sits on Church Hill (Templomdomb) along with the St John Catholic Church. It is one of nine churches in Szentendre, a city of 25,000. We visited in December, not a busy time in Szentendre. The day was cloudy, the courtyard was deserted, the trees were leafless, very atmospheric. The church here came about because of all the Greek, Serbian, Dalmatian and Bosnian fugitives who came here to start new lives after the fall of Belgrade in 1521. By 1690, a significant number had settled in Szentendre, and so the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Buda was founded in the village.
