On the other side of the tabletop from Lighthouse Rock is another rock formation, which looks a bit like the prow of a ship to me. That would be appropriate, as it faces the lighthouse! This unique rock formation is in Palo Duro Canyon, near Amarillo TX, the biggest canyon no one has heard of and the second largest canyon in the country. You can hike up a bit higher from this tabletop, around to the right of the rock formation, for a slightly higher view. If you are very intrepid, and young, you can make a final 20' vertical ascent to stand atop this rock! I elected not to try! Palo Duro Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. Palo Duro Canyon was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934. The Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use...
