Description
The Shotover River near Queenstown on the South Island of New Zealand sounds like a place that ought to be dedicated to extreme sports. Indeed, if you google the name, you will find many links to jetboat and river rafting tours that rip through this narrow canyon many times a day. We elected to simply take in the incredible beauty of the rocky cliffs and the turquoise water, both from a short hike along the river edge and from the Edith Cavell Bridge that spans the canyon. The name of the river correctly suggests that this 75-kilometre (47 mi) long river is fast flowing, with numerous rapids. The river flows generally south from the Southern Alps before flowing into the Kawarau River east of Queenstown.
