Description
It’s always amazing to visit the great cathedrals of Europe. The great craftsmanship and care taken in their construction is evident in every nook and cranny. The Duomo in Siena is no exception. It was built between 1215 and 1263 and decorated inside and out in alternating stripes of white and greenish-black marble. Black and white are the colors of the civic coat of arms of Siena. I gravitated naturally to the ‘dome tour’ for the joy of the climb and knowing that wonderful interior and exterior vistas awaited! Here is a look down at the main aisle of the church. Where to look first! The hexagonal dome (seen in part at the top of the photo) has trompe l'oeil coffers painted in the late 15th century in blue with golden stars. The colonnade below it is adorned with images and statues of 42 patriarchs and prophets, painted in 1481. The large stucco statues beneath the dome were sculpted in 1490. Originally they were polychromed, but later, in 1704, gilded. Let your eyes wander down to the floor. The etched and inlaid marble mosaic floor is one of the most ornate of its kind in Italy, covering the whole floor of the cathedral. This undertaking went on from the 14th to the 16th centuries, and about forty artists made their contribution. The floor consists of 56 panels in different sizes. They represent the sibyls, scenes from the Old Testament, allegories and virtues. Most are still in their original state.

Wow, you are so right. the cathedrals in Europe are nothing short of spectacular, especially since "Black and Decker" would not be invented for a couple more hundred years.....
