The large Torii gates along the 4 km path at the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto Japan are paid for and donated by national and local businesses whose name and date of donation is inscribed on the back of the gate. However, as you hike along the pathway, you find multiple smaller shrines with stacks of miniature torii gates that were donated by visitors with smaller budgets. I assume that the inscriptions face you on the path since otherwise you would never have the opportunity to see the back of the gate with the donor’s information.
