Description
One advantage of staying in a traditional hanok (traditional Korean house) in Seoul was the ability to get out for a quick morning walk to see the rest of the neighborhood. The streets are narrow, the houses close. One thing that is striking is how some of the traditional Korean style and sentiment are still retained while accommodating modern conveniences and lifestyle. The 'look' of the doors, windows, and roof are retained, but you see electrical wires and meters, with skyscrapers as a backdrop. While the palaces were colorful and beautiful, set in spacious parks, the reality of life for the 'other half' or maybe the other 99.9% back in the days of the monarchy seems quite different. This is not a museum: even today, while tourists roam the streets taking photos, they are reminded to be quiet so as not to disturb the residents.
