Description
Today St Simons Island, Georgia, is a favored vacation spot and the beautiful two-story, brick keepers’ dwelling and the white, 104-foot tower on St. Simons Island Lighthouse seem like they would be an ideal posting! This was not always the case. The original lighthouse dated from 1810 but the lighthouse and keepers structure were dynamited when Confederate troops abandoned the island in 1862. A new lighthouse was completed in 1872 and two men died during the construction likely due mosquito borne illnesses. A lighthouse keeper was also killed by his assistant during a duel in 1880. Further there are rumors of hauntings here! Today, the lighthouse still guides ships into St. Simons Sound and warns of the many sandbars in the area. In 2004, ownership of the lighthouse was transferred to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. The light mechanism is maintained by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, It is a popular tourist destination for visiting the lighthouse museum as well as climbing the tower for a view of the surrounding landscape and seascape.
