You would not expect that the start of a hike from Vernazza to Monterosso in Cinque Terre Italy would start out through the quaint streets, alleys, lanes and stairways of Vernazza before reaching the actual trail! But so it is! These stairs are worn by the steps of many thousands of visitors a year as the Cinque Terre is a hikers' paradise. Not far beyond this point you emerge onto the trail with the spectacular views of the town and of the Ligurian Sea. Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
