Unless you sleep in a boat in the harbor in the Cinque Terre town of Riomaggiore, Italy, everything is UP. I walked UP a winding road from the train station to my B&B where my host cheerfully told me that if I wanted a quicker way into town, I could take some stairs. OK, I'll try that, always up for a new way. My first reaction is WOW what a great view of the Ligurian Sea off the west coast of Italy. After that, I'm wondering how I'm going to find my way back up the maze of stairways (this is actually one of the wider areas). Finally, I'm thinking all those hours on the treadmill and stairclimbing machines are finally going to pay off in a big way! Fast forward...The WOW factor never abated, it was beautiful every single time; amazingly it wasn't that hard to find my way back up; and yes, those hours in the gym paid off! Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses tumble down rocky cliffs, ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The five towns are a hikers tourism resort paradise. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
