Description
A couple of days prior to this visit to the site of Wohlers Monument on Steward Island New Zealand, I had to abort a visit due to winds blowing so hard that it was difficult to even stand up straight! But on the last day or our stay, the sun was shining and the wind had abated some, so I went around visiting some of the places I had missed in the previous week due to wind and rain. Wohler’s monument is located on a part of Steward Island named Ringaringa, across the water from Ruapuke, where an early missionary named Wohlers spent 41 years as pastor, farmer, educator, writer, and deputy registrar of births, deaths and marriages for the district of Foveaux Strait. With apologies to Reverend Wohlers, the monument itself is rather forgettable and the cultural vandalism committed by missionaries regrettable, but the peninsula of land on which the monument sits offers spectacular vistas!
