Description
St Paul's Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral and is one of the most famous and most recognizable sights in London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. St Paul's sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London. The present church dating from the late 17th century was built to an English Baroque design of Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London. It is the second largest church building in the UK after Liverpool Cathedral. St Paul's Cathedral occupies a significant place in the national identity of the English population. Among the important services that have been held at St Paul's are the funeral of Winston Churchill, peace services marking the end of both World Wars, the wedding of Charles and Diana, and thanksgiving service for the 80th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
