Description
My second visit I found the Sturgeon Bay Pierhead lighthouse in the midst of a snowy blowy storm. At this point the snow was blowing nearly sideways and it was freezing cold! It was only my freezing fingers and the fall of darkness that drove me away! The Sturgeon Bay Canal North Pierhead Light is located on Sturgeon Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. Painted red, the light is situated on the north pier of the southern entrance to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal. There are two lighthouses at this location, the other being the Sturgeon Bay Canal Lighthouse, located on the USCG property. The lighthouse was constructed in October and November of 1881, after Congress finally appropriated money for the project originally proposed by the Lighthouse Board in 1873. The light guides ships into the entrance of the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal, which provides a shortcut to Green Bay that avoids the dangerous Northern Passage around the Door Peninsula commonly referred to as "Death's Door."
