Description
Sun Voyager is a one of the most visited sites in Reykjavik Iceland. Even on a cold, rainy and windy day in February, there were dozens of people coming and going, waiting their turn for a selfie with the stylized boat. The sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason won a competition for a new outdoor work to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavík in 1990. The sculpture has its roots in an almost spiritual experience Jón had in Finland in 1985. He had a vision where he saw before him a Sun Voyager. He felt that he had been a part of a journey hundreds of years ago traveling from Mongolia to Iceland, a trip with a promise of an unsettled land. He believed this was a real story from his prior life on earth. The journey was very real for the artist although to many it might sound surrealistic. Thus, Sun Voyager is a dream boat, and not as many think a Viking ship.
