Description
On a somewhat gloomy Sunday morning I decided to visit the Szechenyi Baths in Budapest Hungary. The Szechenyi Medicinal Bath in Budapest is the largest medicinal bath in Europe and a 'must-do' for visitors to the city! In the baths there are pools of varying temperature. There are also 11 thermal pools inside. I tried every single one, but settled in for a good soak in the warmest ones! There is even a cooling pool inside with a temperature of 20 degrees C. There were actually people sitting in it, but I could only manage putting my feet in. The outdoor pools (swimming pool, adventure pool and thermal sitting pool) are 27- 38C. Of course on a cool morning the steam was rising out of the 38 degree C pool and that's where most people were relaxing! The water supply for the bath is provided by the Saint Stephen Well Nr. II commissioned in 1938. The water bubbles to the surface at 77 degrees C and is then mixed with cooler water to provide the various pool temperatures. It is a hot-spring water with calcium, magnesium, hydro-carbonate, sodium and sulphate, with a significant content in fluoride and metaboric acid. The water is reputed to be beneficial for various disorders, and as a benefit the mineral content makes your skin feel amazing! The whole process of going to the baths is at first a little intimidating but after the first time, it's a breeze. By the time the warm pools had eased away any of the kinks from carrying my backpack the sun started to emerge and the clouds break up for a lovely day. Then I could start taking photos!
