First Nations people named it Takakkaw which roughly translates as 'it is magnificent' in the Cree language. Maybe they didn't have a word for something more superlative than magnificent because that word hardly describes it. Takakkaw Falls in Yoho National Park (British Columbia Canada) was absolutely my most memorable and favorite site during my summer visit to the area. As you first glimpse Takakkaw Falls during your drive on Yoho Valley Road in Yoho National Park (British Columbia, Canada), you can't believe your eyes. First at its magnificence, even from afar, and second at the clean clean air! On a sunny day, it was so clear that there didn't appear to be one particle of anything in the air. When you get closer the thundering water is frightening and thrilling and enthralling and amazing. Using the 'old' definition of awesome, it was truly awe-inspiring. It has a total height of 384 m (1259'), ranking it as one of the highest in Canada. Even though it is narrow, the water thundering over the cliff sends spray a hundred or more meters downstream. Fed by the Daly Glacier above, Takakkaw Falls' flow is at its peak in July when glacial meltwater is running freely. The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks of Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho along with three provincial parks comprise a UNESCO World Heritage site.
