Description
It was a pretty miserable late afternoon at Tappan Bridge, also known as Kittle Bridge, a wooden covered bridge in the town of Hardenburgh in Ulster County, New York. I wasn't quite sure how I had stumbled upon this bridge. The directions I had were pretty poor, but miraculously they led me right to the Forge Bridge about a mile away! However with the bad weather, the lateness of the afternoon, and the sudden loss of any GPS signal at all, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to retrace my steps! I'd been warned away from trespassing on the Forge Bridge so I looked VERY carefully here for any POSTED signs but there weren't any...which makes sense since this is still a 'working' bridge. And then I was cold. All I could think of was NOT staying in a fleabag motel and having a decent hot shower! But I perservered, umbrella in one hand shielding my camera from the rain. Tappan/Kittle bridge was originally constructed in 1906 by Jerome Moot. The only portion of the original bridge that remains is the framing, thus it does NOT qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge was named after a road situated nearby called Tappan road. It is over the Dry Brook, a single span of 43 feet of King post truss.
