Description
I took a class here at the Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus several years ago and marveled at the site's transformation in such a short time. When we moved to Fort Worth in 1998 this was the site of Ripley Arnold Housing, a public housing development constructed in the 1940s and named for the founder of Fort Worth. The two story, red brick apartment buildings were arranged with the fronts of the apartments facing the streets and the rears facing courtyards and playgrounds. Many old oak and pecan trees were present throughout the site. But the days of the complex were numbered. In 2002 it was decided that Ripley Arnold Place would be demolished and its residents would be relocated to other apartment communities within Fort Worth. At that time Radio Shack located its world headquarters in gleaming new buildings on the river banks. However, financial problems in the economy and the company led to the eventual sale of part of the property to Tarrant County College for their Trinity River Campus. The campus opened in phases in 2004 and 2005 and features three six story buildings, a commons building, a Tarrant County College Store and a multi-level parking garage to accommodate all students, employees, and guests. The layout of the site plan offers everyone views of the river and has inviting public gardens and landscaping. Each building is named after something associated with the Trinity River and all of the buildings are connected by a curving circulation spine. The three office buildings are named the East Fork, Clear Fork, and the West Fork. The commons building is called the Trinity Building. The Tarrant County College Store was the last portion of the campus that was completed, and it opened on May 20, 2005. What a beautiful place to have to have the opportunity to go to college!
