Description
This is the courthouse that was almost destroyed! The Tarrant County Courthouse sits on Main Street in Fort Worth, Texas. To get to from one end of Main Street to the other, you have to drive around the building. In 1958, the County Commissioners devised a plan to add a new Civil Courts Building on the west side of the Courthouse (the left side). This was the part of a master plan to build a criminal courts building on the east side of the Courthouse. At which point, this courthouse would have been destroyed so that you could drive straight through on Main Street! What were they thinking!? In 1983, the decision was made to restore the Courthouse to its former grandeur. That did not include the restoration of the dome and clock tower which was completed in 2012. In 2014, the monstrosity that was Civil Courts Building on the west (left) side was demolished and the west portico restored. It is a striking example of American Beaux Arts Design and was modeled in pink granite after the Texas Capitol Building in Austin.

Beautiful work Joan! I am personally glad they tore down the Civil Courts building next door, it was an eyesore next to this beautiful building!
