Description
Teatro Real (Royal Theatre) is a major opera house located in Madrid, Spain. The Opera House is located on the Plaza de Oriente just in front of the Palacio Real. This square has to be is one of the prettiest in Madrid, with landscaped gardens, 44 statues of Spanish monarchs. It is also ringed by cafes, beautiful trees and very pretty buildings. The theatre was founded by King Ferdinand VII in 1818, and after thirty-two years of planning and construction, a Royal Order on 7 May 1850 decreed the immediate completion of the "Teatro de Oriente". The building works were finished within five months. It closed in 1925 when a Royal Order of 6 December called for eviction owing to the damage that the construction of the Metro de Madrid had caused to the building! Although it reopened in the 1960s as a theatre, it didn't reopen as an opera house until 1997.
