Description
It is always amazing to me how early artists used their art for story-telling purposes, and how much symbolism they could manage to cram into a painting or a statue.
Even with only a passing familiarity with Christianity, one might be able to identify the lower statue in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City as being of Peter, since he is holding keys in his right hand, a symbol of the power promised to him by Christ. Sometimes in Rome you just stop seeing the statues since there are so many of them everywhere you look, and most of the time you don't recognize who they might be anyway. All those obscure and long-ago saints.... But I admit to screeching to a halt in front of this one! Thinking to myself "I know who that is!" Pius IX (1846-1878) decided to replace older statues of Sts. Peter and Paul, with the current larger ones on Easter 1847. The previous pope, Gregory XVI (1831-1846) had commissioned Giuseppe De Fabris to sculpt this statue for St. Paul Outside-the-Walls from 1838-1840. The statue of Peter is 5.55 m in height, on a pedestal 4.91m high. These statues had never been placed there because they were judged to be unsuitable for the inside of that Basilica. In the background is the upper façade of St Peter’s Basilica.
