Artist's Description
Three 11-foot bronze stutues of wild horses sit on the campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas TX. They were dedicated in 2005. SMU Mustangs, the only such sculpture on campus to depict the University's wild mustang mascot, were commissioned by real estate developer John W. Carpenter III in honor of his wife, Cele Slaughter Briscoe Carpenter ('78), on their 25th wedding anniversary. Mustangs were chosen as the mascot for SMU in 1917 as a suggestion from the then-President's secretary, Miss Dorothy Amann. She thought the football team during practice looked like "a herd of wild mustangs kicking up a cloud of dust". Mustangs, who live in the wild in supportive, free-roaming herds, exhibit an unconquerable spirit, and survive by their strength, speed, toughness and endurance.
