Description
The market square (Grote Markt) of Bruges Belgium is a gathering place, especially so on a mild fall evening! The landmark of the square is the belfry, or Belfort, a medieval bell tower in the historical centre. One of the city's most prominent symbols, the belfry formerly housed a treasury and the municipal archives, and served as an observation post for spotting fires and other danger. A narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps, accessible by the public for an entry fee, leads to the top of the 83-metre-high building, which leans about a metre to the east. It isn't that easy to get a picture of the Belfort at night since there are so many people gathering and walking through the square, and in true 2013 fashion, people photo-bombing your efforts to take a picture!
