Description
It's not what you expect of a lighthouse. You envision a pretty red and white striped structure sitting on a rocky windswept cliff on the ocean edge. What you get is at Tinicum Island Rear Range Light in Paulsboro, NJ is a skeleton structure sitting amid baseball fields! However, it is still an active lighthouse (automated in 1933) and serves as a key guide for ships heading north along the Delaware River toward ports at Philadelphia and Camden. It was first lighted the night of December 31, 1880. It is equipped with a fixed red light with 1,000 watt lamps exhibiting 500,000 candle-power. The light is 112 feet above sea level. The rear range lighthouse, which is owned by the United States Coast Guard, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 15, 2005.

I know this range well, used it for navigation when with the USCG. Very nice shot, I only saw it from the water view.

Great perspective on this unusual lighthouse, Joan. Love the contrast between the soft white clouds and the hard metal of the light. f/l
