Description
The 12th-century cloister at Sant Pau del Camp in Barcelona just might be the smallest cloister ever! It is a major highlight of a visit to the church as it features Moorish arches, a central fountain, and animals adorning the capitals. Sant Pau del Camp used to stand outside the city walls (before the 14th century): its name translates to 'Saint Paul of the countryside' or 'Saint Paul in the fields') but now stands within the bustling and multicultural El Raval district in central Barcelona. It is one of the best -preserved Romanesque buildings in Barcelona. It used to be part of a 10th century Benedictine monastery and is therefore one of the oldest buildings in Barcelona. This tiny cloister combined Romanesque and Moorish styles, a technique that was admired by artists such as Picasso and Gaudi. The site was declared a national monument in 1879.
