Description
Tiritiri Matangi Island is a wildlife sanctuary near Auckland New Zealand and one of the country's most important and exciting conservation projects. Tiritiri Matangi is rich in Maori and European history but today has undergone one of the most successful community-led conservation projects in the world. Unwanted predators have been eradicated and rare native birds such as the kokako and the takahe (once thought to be extinct) survive and thrive in restored habitats within regenerating native forest. Not only that, it has a lighthouse, left over from its days as an inhabited island! The lighthouse is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand. It is considered the best-preserved lighthouse complex in the country, and is the oldest lighthouse in New Zealand still in operation. It marks the approach to Auckland Harbour some 28 kilometres to the south. It was once the most powerful lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere. Constructed in 1864 from cast iron, the light was first lit on 1 January 1865. The light was first automated in 1925 and used an acetylene burning revolving light. Keepers returned to the light in 1947 and it remained manned until 1984 when the light was fully automated.
