Description
The day was alternately cloudy and sunny in Toledo Spain, but also very windy so that the cumulus clouds were scudding across the sky. I wanted to capture the beautiful late afternoon light on the face of the Primate Cathedral of Saint Mary of Toledo but as I would press the shutter, the sun would go behind a cloud! I would wait and wait for the next sunny patch and hope that no one was standing right in front of the camera! Finally, after several attempts I was successful! The plaza in front of the cathedral (Plaza de Ayuntamiento) was a busy place, with hoardes of tourists taking a break from their wanderings, having a snack, checking their cell phones, and of course taking selfies. Although this is not the side of the cathedral where you enter, it is considered the main facade. The elaborate portal is known as the Portal of Forgiveness, which was begun in 1418. It is so called because indulgences were granted to penitents who entered through it. It has a main arch with six archivolts and a lot of Gothic Catholic iconography. The tower to the left is square in cross-section in the lower part, and octagonal in the upper part. The cathedral is one of the three 13th-century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is ranked as one of the greatest Gothic structures in Europe. It was begun in 1226 under the rule of Ferdinand III and the last Gothic contributions were made in the 15th century when, in 1493, the vaults of the central nave were finished during the time of the Catholic Monarchs.

Lovely capture Joan. I do love the sunlight on the face of the building. Your patience was rewarded with great capture!

the gray and blue clouds played an excellent backdrop for this wonderfully executed shot, brilliant!
