Description
I witnessed the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia, USA) in the late 1960s…I was in elementary school. Who can appreciate such a thing at that age? So when I viewed it again in 2019 I was overcome with the intense sense of honor, respect and care given by the Tomb Guard sentinels. This ceremony happens 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The sentinels honor the fallen in the dead of night when no one is watching and in weather no civilian wants to venture out in. It is profoundly moving. The sentinels themselves are the best of the elite 3rd US Infantry Regiment. There is not a molecule out of place on their uniform, equipment, demeanor, or movements. When you are commanded to stand during the ceremony by a rigid stare from behind mirrored sunglasses….you stand!
