Description
At the Torii gates at a Shinto shrine, gates are paid for and donated by a national or local business whose name and date of donation are written on the back each gate. As a result the back side of the gates seem more ‘decorated’ to the western eye while the front side is quite plain. I would imagine that reading the inscriptions would be quite a lesson in history, business, religion, and social life to those who read Japanese! These inscriptions are just a tiny part of the many found at Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto’s most important Shinto shrine and one of the most popular attractions for foreign visitors to Japan. The shrine dates from dating from 816. It is famous for the thousands of red gates (Senbon Torii) that line a path of about 4 km. The function of a torii is to mark the entrance to a sacred space so that the path leading to a Shinto shrine is always straddled by one or more torii. Inari is the god of rice, sake, and abundant crops. Over time, Inari came also to be the patron of business, merchants and manufacturers as having good income was a sign of good crops of a sort. The custom to donate a torii started in the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to get a wish to become true or to thank for a wish that became true. Good luck finding out how many torii there are. It’s either ‘roughly a thousand’ or ‘thousands of them’ or ‘over 5000’ or ‘over 10,000’. Take your pick, or just enjoy the walk!
