Before we even got to the trail to Rifugio Menaggio in the Lake Como area of Italy, we had a day’s worth of exploration! After a ferry ride from Varenna to Menaggio, we found the bus stop for the infrequent bus heading to the mountain town Breglia, the starting point of the hike. The bus ride was a 25-minute adventure on a steep hairpin road to the town’s altitude of 750m. At that point, we double and triple-checked our grasp of Italian and of the return bus schedule! Some buses don’t run on school holidays or weekends, none run after 6. Confident (?) in ourselves we headed up the trail. Along the way, you walk through farmland, across cobbled roads, and through what seems like someone’s back yard. You find small buildings in various stages of disrepair, some of which seem to be working farm buildings. Finally, you climb high enough to leave all that behind and make the final climb to the Rifugio at about 1400m. Even at the point in the trail shown here, you revel the glorious spring sunshine and blue skies. Once at the refuge, you are treated to spectacular views all the way to the Alps in the north and the end of the lake at Como in the south. Many of the hiking trails of today have their origins in trade and travel routes in the region but now serve hikers out to enjoy the beauty of nature.
