Description
I was scheduled to stay at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari New Mexico (USA) on a November night, a few days before they would close for the winter. I was excited for the opportunity since it is one of the most famous and iconic motels along historic Route 66, serving travelers since 1939. But due to unforeseen circumstances they had to close a few days earlier than planned and I missed my opportunity. Nevertheless I walked over to photograph the neon lighting. Around in the back was the “Blue Swallow Court” sign, which looked like either a friendly beacon of light in the night or a lonely reminder of how deserted it was. Blue Swallow Motel It is one of the longest continuously operated motels along New Mexico's slice of Route 66. It was named by Smithsonian Magazine as "the last, best and friendliest of the old-time motels". From what I can determine the ‘refrigerated air’ dates from the 1950s and must have been a real selling point! It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
