Description
I remember that my visit to Zaragoza Spain was on a very cold and windy January day! It was bright and sunny and the sky was that beautiful blue you get in the winter, but still the wind blew hard if you tried walking along the river. So I found myself a nice seat in a cafĂ© on the Plaza de Pilar, enjoyed the sunshine and a refreshing adult beverage, and took some photos from the comfort of my cafĂ© seat! This is the view along the long plaza with the BasĂlica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar) on the left and the Catedral del Salvador (Cathedral of the Savior, with the tall tower) at the far end of the plaza. Both churches share co-cathedral status in Zaragoza. The rather unique name of Our Lady of the Pillar comes from an ancient local tradition which takes the history of this basilica to 2 January 40 CE in Spain and to an alleged apparition by Mary the mother of Jesus to Saint James. According to the legend, James was preaching the Gospel in Spain, but was disheartened because of the failure of his mission. While he was deep in prayer by the banks of the Ebro River, he claimed that Mary appeared to him, gave him a column of jasper and instructed him to build a church in her honor. It is believed that a small chapel was built in this location about a year later. As with other ancient buildings, the structures that have existed at this site have gone through many alterations over the years. The present spacious church in Baroque style was begun in 1681 by Charles II, King of Spain and completed in 1686, with further changes up until 1872. This history of the Cathedral of the Savior as a Christian church is not quite as long. It sits in the same space that had previously been occupied by the Roman Temple of the Forum, the Visigoth church and the Higher Moslem Mosque. Muslims were evicted after the arrival of Alfonso I (king of Aragon and Navarre) in 1118 and construction of a Romanesque church was begun in 1140. It also went through many stylistic additions, changes, and repairs: Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque and neo-classic. The rivalry between the churches was resolved in 1676.
