Description
On a panga (small boat) ride along the rocky coast of Bartolome Islet in the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador), we were able to observe and photograph several penguins interacting or just hanging out. The challenge was to catch the shot you wanted from a small rocking boat with several other people all trying to accomplish the same thing! These two seemed to be very happy as they interacted or groomed or …. whatever it was they were doing! The cool waters of the Humboldt and Cromwell Currents allow the Galapagos penguin to survive despite the tropical latitude. It is one of the smallest species of penguin in the world, averaging only 19-20” tall and weighing around 5.5–9.9 lb. It is currently the rarest penguin species and is listed as endangered.
