Description
Facing the Placa de la Reina in Valencia Spain is one facade of the Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia (right) and the bell tower known as El Miguelete or El Micalet (left). Despite its grand name, the cathedral seems dwarfed by the bell tower! Also called Saint Mary's Cathedral or Valencia Cathedral, it has one of the oddest entries ever! Instead of a splendid facade dominating the square on which it sits, the entry seems tucked into the corner of the square in the shadow of the bell tower. Nevertheless, it is still an impressive Baroque facade. El Miguelete is one of Valencia's iconic monuments, more so than the cathedral. It is of gothic style construction made in the fourteenth century and finished in the fifteenth. Although the architecture of El Miguelete is mainly Gothic, certain Romanesque and Baroque elements can be observed in its design carried out during various periods. Its name comes from the name of its biggest bell "Miguel", made in 1532 and weighing more than 10 tons. Inside there is a spiral staircase with 207 steps up to the summit 63 meters above the ground where you can get nice views of the surrounding city.
