Description
Van Zandt County, with its county seat in Canton Texas, has had seven courthouses, this being the last one built in 1937. It was built with Public Works Administration funds to provide jobs for men of the country during the Depression Era. It features Art Moderne and Art Deco details. The marker outside the courthouse says the courthouse is noteworthy for its ‘vertical emphasis’. There were many courhouses and notable buildings in Texas built with PWA funding. Given the state of affairs in 2020, Texas and the rest of the country could use some 21st century PWA-type funding to refurbish buildings and infrastructure! Van Zandt County in Texas is named for Isaac Van Zandt who began his political career as a congressman in the Republic of Texas (1840-1842) under President Sam Houston. He acted as a Charge d’Affaires to the United States in 1842 to negotiate a treaty for the annexation of Texas. After the approval of Texas’ annexation in the US Congress in 1845, Van Zandt serves as a delegate to the Texas Convention which approved annexation and wrote the new state constitution. While campaigning for governor of Texas in 1847, he caught yellow fever and died. The county was named in his honor in 1848.
