Vernazza is one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre region of Italy and is often said to be the most beautiful, and favorite, of the five. Viewed from the rocky coastline across the harbor from the main commercial waterfront area, you can see the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia (left) dating from the 11th-12th century. High atop the hill is Doria Castle, built in the 15th century as a lookout tower to protect the village from pirates. Farther to the right is the breakwater that enhances the calm anchorage of the only natural port in the Cinque Terre. Having a port allowed Vernazza to play an important historic role in the conquest and defense of the area. The Cinque Terre region went through periods of both stagnation and growth from the 16th century onward. Today it is famous for its colorful and pixturesque houses and depends heavily on tourism. In 1997, the Cinque Terre region was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1999 the National Park of the Cinque Terre was created. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue.
