Description
As one website states, The National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II (Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II) in Rome Italy is a ‘remarkably large’ building! That is probably the kindest thing it’s been called! It commemorates Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. In addition, the monument also holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame, built after World War I under the equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and the statue of goddess Roma. Despite this high-minded history, it has been a controversial monument from the start. It is the largest monument in Rome and a large area of medieval structures on Capitoline Hill were destroyed for its construction. Thus it’s been said that it was "chopped with terrible brutality into the immensely complicated fabric of the hill". The monument itself is often regarded as conspicuous, pompous and too large. It is also glaringly white, built from "corpse-white marble" making it highly conspicuous amidst the generally brownish buildings surrounding it. For its shape and conspicuous nature, Romans have given it a number of humorous and uncomplimentary nicknames, including la torta nuziale ("the wedding cake"), la dentiera ("the dentures"), macchina da scrivere ("the typewriter") and la zuppa inglese ("English soup" dessert, which refers to a trifle). Despite all this, the viewing area atop the monument remains a popular place to view the cityscape.
