Description
It started out a cloudy day but in late afternoon the clouds cleared allowing the setting sun to warm the Vienna Gate at Bratislava Castle, in Bratislava Slovakia. The Castle itself was closed for restoration so the main reason to walk up the hill was for the city view. The castle stands on an isolated rocky hill of the Little Carpathians directly above the Danube river in the middle of Bratislava. Because of its size and location, it has been a dominant feature of the city for centuries, with the first written record dating back to 907 CE. Between 1387-1437, it underwent a radical Gothic reconstruction. After 1526, it because the seat of Hungarian monarchs. Under the reign of Maria Teresa (1740-1780) the castle was transformed into a luxurious Baroque residence. The Vienna Gate was built during this time. In 1811 it was burned down and stood in ruins until 1953 when restorations began.
