Description
Several years ago, I had the great fun of driving the Moki Dugway from north to south, that is, down the cliffside. When I had the opportunity again, I decided it was time to drive it from south to north, up the cliffside. It is some of the most fun 3 miles you will ever drive! It is a steep (11% grade), unpaved, but well graded road that climbs the cliff edge in a series of hairpin switchbacks. The change in altitude is 1,200 feet from the valley floor near Valley of the Gods to Cedar Mesa at the top. Along the way you can stop in some pull-outs to admire the valley view and take some photos. It is in use all year round but might be dicey after a lot of rain. Which made me wonder….I saw a school bus pass me in the opposite direction and wondered about what happens to school for children on the opposite end of the cliff after the rain. A rain day? The Moki (or Mokee or Moqui) Dugway is located on Utah Route 261 just north of Mexican Hat. It seems like an odd name for a road. But Moki is derived from the Spanish word moqui, which was a general term used by the 18th century Spanish explorers in this region to describe the Pueblo Indians they encountered and the vanished culture which had left behind the numerous ruins they discovered during their travels. Dugway is “a road constructed along a hillside by using for the fill on the downhill side material excavated immediately above it”. The Moki Dugway was constructed in the 1950′s by Texas Zinc Minerals to provide a way to haul uranium and vanadium ore from the Happy Jack Mine on Cedar Mesa at the top to the processing mill in Halchita, near Mexican Hat below.
