Description
There are so many hiking opportunities in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, it’s difficult to decide which one to do! On this particular day, I decided on a hike from Corniglia (please say Cor-NEE-ya, not Cor-NIG-lee-a) to Manarola via the hill town of Volastra along one of the higher trails that lead through the vineyards and offers spectacular views of the Ligurian Sea (what the Mediterranean is called in this little corner of the globe). That is Corniglia down there on the rocky outcropping! It is the only one of the five Cinque Terre towns that does not sit on the waterfront. If you zoom in, or even just look carefully, you see the steeple of a church on the far right of the buildings. That is where the trail begins. From there it starts with a steady climb up to 375 m altitude. There are impressive views over the famous vineyards that drop 300 m to the sea. The local people have created a large network of drystone walls which follow the contours of the slopes to support the terraces and prevents the soil from being washed away. It is called terrazzamento and is a beautiful form of landscape art! The most northern of the Cinque Terre towns, Monterrosso, is visible in a curve of land in the distance. The entire Cinque Terre region is part of a UNESCO World Heritage area.

Gorgeous scenery with bright blue sky and sea, Joan! The terrazzamento is very impressive and interesting to read about! It's on my bucket list now to see this in person! l/f
