Description
I first arrived in Varenna Italy, on Lake Como, late in the afternoon, too late to undertake any major hiking. So I decided on just a short hike to the source of the Fiumelatte, the shortest river in Italy. Along the trail there was a sign for “Baluardo”. My limited Italian wasn’t helpful so I just stood and stared at the sign for awhile, debating whether the hike to Baluardo was worth it after a long day of travel! In the end I did the short but steep hike, to be rewarded with fantastic views of Varenna (seen here) and up and down Lake Como. Turns out that Baluardo means ‘rampart’, and it is a rocky spur surrounded by cypress trees, a perfect place!

Magical, Joan. The lighting dancing across the buildings adds to the sense of fantasy. l/f/tweet
